Wardrobe Analysis: Nina

In the video, Nina has two main attires: A patterned top and a fleeced coat, both with a long skirt.

In the different versions, black and white or normal coloured, the effects represent different things. Many indie videos have a greyed or dull colour scale to represent the broody genre, which I am currently considering for my final video.

In colour, a close up of Nina's face profile shows gentle shadowing from the lighting arrangements and her dark make up suits the dark and light contrast created by the lights, as if it were natural.

Here, in black and white, her complexion is consistent so nothing drastically stands out as it does in colour.  A duller effect may cause the viewer to think about the lyrics in a deeper perspective. The two shots in different effects cause different interpretations to be made and it is just a matter of which one I will want and is it conventional of indie genre.

In most outdoors shots, Nina wore a fleeced coat. The reason for this mainly being that is was three degrees, and also I said that she should dress how she wanted her audience to interpret her.
Left if Holly Willoughby, popular female TV presenter. The coat represents sophistication and class: I think that in juxtaposition to Angharads casual grunge clothing style it creates a unique sense of how different the two are but how well the different styles of their voices compliment each other.

Beyonce, superstar, embraces her hairs wild curls.
When it came to pre performance hair and make up, I wanted Nina to express herself as the bold character she is. I liked the idea of having an iconic part of her that will become something associated with her bold voice.  It seems to represent that her voice in untamed and edgy.
When we were deciding how the girls should do their make up, I thought that Nina should have a more sultry smokey eye look to match her classy outfit. Demonstrating the look I wanted to go for is soul singer adele. The dark on the outside and light inside the eye looks elegant and I replicated this as I saw similarities between Nina and adele's styles.

One of the most popular social networking sites is Facebook. With over 1000 friends I can connect to, anything I post self-promotes it to be seen and shared in seconds. This is the post that will feature on people's feeds of what people can freely post. Hopefully someone will take the time to watch it and give me feedback on it.

Editing

Here is the first edit of our complete music video to criminal. I have put a black and white effect on it, commonly used in indie genre.

Wardrobe analysis: Angharad

This music video is meant to reflect who the duet are and so should wear whatever they would usually wear to perform. The costume gives off a message to viewers on the type of people they and what their music might be like.

Angharad wore a dark dress with Doc martens, an iconic boot for the grunge era.

Angharad (left) also wore a baggy checkered shirt. This is suitable for the indie genre as a common style convention is to have a heavily layered top with less on the bottom and chunky boots.
Grunge look sported by Taylor Momsen
Model wearing conventional grunge clothing

The indie grunge look is becoming increasingly popular among alternative singers. It consists of a minimal effort, strewn together wardrobe choice clothing resulting in a contrast of many layers and  exposed legs.
Taylor Momsen, lead singer of popular indie band 'The pretty reckless' demonstrates a classic grunge look for other upcoming indie singers to aspire to look like. It can be easily replicated as it has been around since the time of the punk era where the fashion over laps.
The punk fashion style was typically more extreme with use of vibrant colours contrasted with chunky dark clothing, dark hair and over-over-accessorized to exaggerate their outgoing look.

Evaluation

All in all, it was a success and so will not need to reschedule or make time for more footage to be redone. In reference to my risk assessment, the weather stayed neutral and calm and the spot was quiet and easy to get in some scenic shots without too many of the public being involved.

Critical points

When reviewing our footage, we found that in several shots, a dot of dirt was on the camera lens. Although not too noticeable, it is annoying to work around it. Thankfully with the amount of times we shot the duet singing, it was easy to put in alternative footage.

We also originally planned to change locations to Uphill, however due to our timekeeping we decided that it would be too dark by the time we relocated.

If I were to redo this project in future, I would fully ensure

We also found it impractical to carry about heavy equipment (the camera, tripod and dolly) however this could not be avoided and was foreseen.

I feel I have learnt a lot more on how to manage equipment, skills on audio, camera work, lighting, organisation of crew and digital management.

I feel confident that I can achieve a music video with good continuity and reflects the fantastic songwriting and vocals that the pair produce.

Post-shooting

Today we managed to get all of our footage done to begin editing. We got a range of shots and variations only from marine lake and the studio.

We got the duet to sing the song several times in one location from several different camera angles so we can selectively choose and try out different variations when we edit it.

We used a Sony VG 20 which worked well to get a consistent lighting effect throughout the scenes at different times of day.

We also hired a dolly so that we could make our camera dynamic for some pan shots.

We experimented in the studio with different lighting effects and decided that we wanted a dark setting with a spotlight coming down on them for dark shadows and highlights. I hired the studio from 1-8pm and managed to get all the shooting done by the time we came back at 3 till 5.

In review, me and the duet were very pleased at how the footage came out. I can now incorporate the already recorded original song 'Criminal' into the video.

Practice Shots

Using the time I had within the college grounds, I borrowed a camera to practice some shots so that I would have a better idea of how to set it up properly and could predict issues beforehand.

I got in some basic shots of close ups, medium shots, over the shoulder and pan shots. There are the main ones I will be working with.

Close up
The close up involves having the camera at a short length from the article that you intend to film. This can be done to give entire focus and attention on one thing.
Issues
As in my case the close ups will be on the singers face, this can create some personal issues they may have. I will have to ask for consent that they are comfortable I can do this.

Medium shot

A medium shot is a safe shot to get all you need in a shot where there is room for editing effects. Issues with this include any background scenery we may not want to include, such as people.

We did find this was a slight issue when we filmed this. In one shot when the duet are sat on the wall, there are a few people strolling along the walkway of marine lake but are not clear enough to be identified so this is not a privacy issue.

 Over the shoulder
This includes a perspective of the camera positioning being behind the person so that the audience can look at what they are doing as if they were personally them. It can break the illusion of watching a performance live, so this may not be a very common one for my video.

Pan shots
Pan shots are just moving the camera on a wide sweep of the setting and ensure it is smooth with no jolting. This establishes the location and can be quite nice if the scenery is nice and fits in.

Issues with this may be that the weather may make it hard to get consistent footage especially by a sea side. Also, a lot of steady camera handling and experience may be useful so I have required a dolly as well as a camera assistant who deals with camera technicalities frequently.
